"I thought it would be a great idea for someone to have a gift shop in East Austin as opposed to going out to the malls," Silvia's Craft Corner owner Silvia Garcia said. Garcia believes in giving back to her community. She grew up in East Austin and says that's where she'll stay. "I feel comfortable in the neighborhood that I work at. The people that come to my store are very comfortable coming there. they just love the idea that there is a store right by them," Garcia said. The women say business is sweet in Austin. Denise More makes scented candles. She and others say you really can have your cake and eat it too. "The thing about Austin is they're very warm and they're very receptive to new things, and supportive of women in business," Grandfield said. It's the type of support that makes the city an excellent place to own a business. "Word of mouth has been my best advertising," Grandfield said. "No better time than now" was the theme of Tuesday's event. In addition to promoting their own businesses, some of the women say they got tips about new business ventures they may want to try. |
