Rare Opportunity to meet “The Last of the Medicine Men”

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to meet Matzuwa Baudelio de la Cruz here in Austin. He was featured in the BBC documentary “The Last of the Medicine Men”. Matzuwa’s name is a reference to a type of clothing worn during ceremony. He is a Mara’acame tribal and ceremonial leader of the utmost standing. Normally he doesn’t leave his community of Tuapuri de Santa Catarina, Mexico since he is in charge of the religious life in his community. So when I heard he would be here in Austin I wanted to go meet him. A man of few words and quite focused and stoic,  I used my Spanish to communicate with him. Currently in the position of healer, Matzuwa will be returning to be in charge of the Temple of the Tuquipa (sacred ground). His ceremonial responsibilities began when he was around 6 years old since he was appointed to be the Akuieri or messenger of the Spirits. At age 17 he was sent to the Temple of the Sun and became the Jicarrerro at the Temple for around 5 yeas. In this position he was in charge of the sacred Gourd consecrated to the sun. From the ages of 22-32 he was the dance leader of the Peyote dance-Tecoamana. In 2001, he became a Mara’acame of the healer position and has carried on in this capacity since then. I let Matzuwa do his healing technique on me being completely open to what would unfold. I have to say that ever since that day there has been a complete positive shift in what is going on in my life. Very interesting indeed! All I can say is Thank you Matzuwa!
